Learn to roller skate with Windsor Roller Derby!

We are excited to offer new skaters an opportunity to learn or improve their roller skating skills in a safe, controlled environment alongside our veteran skaters.

All skaters, of all genders, 18+ are welcome to join.

Please note new skaters looking to join us for roller derby are required to complete Skate School as a prerequisite to joining the team. This ensures skaters have the minimal skills necessary to participate.

Registration fee, dues and insurance coverage:

WRD collects monthly dues from all league members to cover the rental cost of our practice venues. All dues are collected by the treasurer or designated representative the first week of each month.

Dues for training skaters are $30 a month.

Each skater must purchase secondary insurance from WFTDi Canada. The cost is $55 per year (12 months from the time insurance is purchased). For more information about the insurance required to skate please visit WFTDI Canada.

The cost of equipment is not included in the monthly fee or insurance fee.

Equipment Checklist - please note full gear is required for skate school, safety first!

  • Skates: Derby, street or artistic boots are all welcome at skate school. Sorry no rollerblades allowed! Skates generally come complete with wheels and bearings. You may need to purchase new toe stops if you have purchased a ‘started kit’. Toe stops must be non-marking, generally light in colour so as to not scuff the floor at our practice space.

  • Helmet: A snug fit, impact certified helmet is one of the most important pieces of equipment. We recommend both skate and hockey helmets.

  • Knee Pads / Elbow Pads / Wrist Guards: It is important to keep those joints covered! We will teach you to fall safely but you may need to depend on these pieces of equipment for a soft landing.

  • Mouth Guard: A mouth guard will not only protect your teeth, but can help prevent concussions. Mouth guards come in a variety of styles, fits and colours. Please note nightguards are not acceptable. Many roller skaters prefer Sisu and similar slim profile guards as they find it easier to speak with these types of mouth guards.

  • Knee Pad Covers:These can be bandanas, socks etc. We cover our knee pads to help prevent the plastic knee caps from marking up the floor.

  • Other items you may find helpful: Skate tool, gear bag, water bottle or sports towel.
